The geographical location of the Pelion Peninsula
The city of Volos serves as the gateway to the Pelion Peninsula and is located approximately 330 kilometers north of Athens and 213 kilometers south of Thessaloniki. The peninsula, situated in the Aegean Sea, derives its name from Mount Pelion, which stands 1624 meters high. In Greek mythology, Mount Pelion is known as the summer retreat of the gods and the home of the centaurs—mythical creatures half-human, half-horse. This mythological aura still surrounds the peninsula today.
Stretching about 60 kilometers into the sea, Pelion is characterized by its imposing mountains and the gentle waves of the sea. The western side, facing the Pagasetic Gulf, is well-developed and boasts lush ancient olive groves and small pebble coves with turquoise-blue waters. The eastern side, overlooking the Aegean, is noticeably wilder and untamed, surprising visitors with numerous secluded dream beaches, ancient forests, and abundant water sources.
