small and big
ADVENTURES
Walking along the wild donkey paths known as Kalderimis through the lush groves and dense beech forests on the slopes of Pelion, it's not hard to believe that perhaps the centaurs still hide in the thicket of the ancient trees.
Explorations
on the way
For hiking enthusiasts, the Pelion Peninsula offers a true paradise with trails for every level, whether along the coast or in the mountains.
One of the most popular hikes is from Aios Ioannis to Damouchari on the east coast of the peninsula. This 2.7-kilometer coastal path is also suitable for hot summer days.
The 4.3-kilometer hiking trail from Agios Onoufrios to Makrinitsa passes by imposing churches and water sources, offering a magnificent panoramic view.
One of the longest and most challenging day hikes takes you over 17 kilometers deep into the Pelion Mountains, from Makrinitsa to Pouri and across the Western Refuge of Mount Pelion (accommodating up to eight people), offering spectacular views and including
a beautiful old stone bridge.
Another moderate route follows an old donkey path (Kalderimi) from Milies over the mountains to Tsagarada, with an ascent of 600 meters and a descent of 480 meters. Along this path, you'll traverse a peaceful beech forest and discover several small chapels before descending on the Aegean side. In Tsagarada, the most inhabited village on the eastern side, you have three main squares to choose from for a rest stop. However, a must-visit is the square with the church of Agia Paraskevi. Here, one of the oldest plane trees in Greece grows. This monstrous tree is over 1000 years old and has a circumference of 14 meters. Its massive branches cast shade over the entire square. Sitting amidst equally impressive hydrangeas, you can leisurely enjoy a coffee or cold drink while admiring this special tree.
A ride with
the Pelion train
The historic Pelion Railway, which runs on weekends from Ano Lechonia to Milies and back, offers a unique experience. The journey takes you through picturesque landscapes and is particularly a highlight for train enthusiasts. The small train traverses the route with a gauge of 600 millimeters, passing over several historic bridges with views of the magnificent Pagasetic Gulf, reaching its destination station in Milies in 90 minutes. There, after a short walk to the village's Platia, you can enjoy a coffee or explore the area. A ride on this railway is something special for every traveler!
exiting Outdoor activities
There are many possibilities in this region, and while we've already described the simplest outdoor activity, hiking, there are many other options for outdoor enthusiasts.
For example, you can independently explore the east or west coast by sea kayak, discovering hidden sea caves, sea turtles, or tiny islands along the way. Of course, guided tours are also available for those who prefer them.
For those seeking more action, you can join a guided canyoning tour that lasts several hours. Here, you'll climb through steep riverbeds, jump from rocks into cascades of crystal-clear water, or slide over natural rock formations. Thanks to the abundance of water in the region, there are several routes to choose from.
Of course, you can also have fun mountain biking, sailing, or diving in Pelion! Calm and also suitable for children, some of the small hiking trails in Pelion can also be explored on guided horseback tours.
